It's a snow day, so let's learn about snowflakes! Snowflakes are tiny, intricate ice crystals that fall from the sky during snowy weather. DID YOU KNOW that each snowflake is like a frozen work of art, and no two are exactly the same?! The shape of a snowflake is determined by the temperature and humidity in the air when it forms. When water vapor in the clouds freezes, it forms these beautiful crystals.

The process begins with a tiny ice crystal, and as it falls through the freezing air, more and more water molecules stick to it, creating the unique branches and patterns we see in snowflakes. The temperature and humidity levels can create different kinds of snowflakes – some might have six delicate arms, while others could have intricate patterns like ferns or stars. So, the next time you catch a snowflake on your mitten, know that you're holding a tiny masterpiece created by nature's winter magic!

What kind of snowflakes are you seeing where you live?

πŸ–₯️ Happy Computer Science Week! 🌐✨Why is coding an important skill for children to learn? It equips them with essential problem-solving skills, fosters creativity, and cultivates a logical mindset. In an increasingly digital world, coding empowers young minds to navigate and contribute to the technology-driven future with confidence and innovation. At Talcott, students have a lot of hands-on experience learning and working with code, from Scratch Jr. to Mindstorms to Arduino to Python and more. Photo: Talcott students Kobe, Maya and Jonathan are exploring how to develop intelligent agents in Scratch, and students in our Saturday program, Raji, Alexandra, and Aleksander, show off their FIRST Lego League robots - StrawberryBot, TacoBot, and BananaBot.

Want to give your child an opportunity to code? Talcott's Summer of STEM programs always offers a lot of classes that teach coding for students in K-8. Keep an eye out for the full summer class list -- coming in January 2024! #CodingForKids #FutureSkills #talcottscience #summerofscience
